You should change the filter every time you change the oil. If you don't, the residual dirt, water, etc starts washing into your new oil and it gets dirtier faster. Also, as the filter loads up with debris the pressure drop across the filter increases. Cleaner filter means better oil circulation and we all know how important oil is to the Savage. Spending $1.69 for a filter now rather than $500.00 later for a repair sounds like a good inventment to me.
